Kitchen Renovation & Structural Alterations in Pretoria East

Project Overview

This kitchen renovation in Pretoria East transformed an outdated, enclosed kitchen into a bright, modern open-plan living space designed for everyday family life and entertaining.
The existing kitchen and scullery were separated by a dividing wall, limiting natural light and restricting the flow between the two spaces. The homeowners wanted a more functional layout with increased storage, improved work areas and finishes that would complement the rest of the home.
 

To achieve this, the project involved removing the existing cabinetry and finishes before carrying out structural alterations, modifying the plumbing and electrical services, installing custom cabinetry and completing the renovation with carefully selected fixtures, appliances and premium finishes. The result is a cohesive kitchen that blends seamlessly with the adjoining dining and living areas.

Project Overview

1. Vacating the Kitchen & Dismantling the Existing Cabinetry

The project began by clearing the kitchen and carefully dismantling the existing cabinets. This allowed access to the walls, floor and services, preparing the space for the extensive renovation work that followed.

2. Structural Alterations

With the kitchen stripped out, the structural modifications could begin. The dividing wall between the kitchen and scullery was removed and replaced with a structural steel support beam to create an open-plan layout. The scullery door opening was partially closed to accommodate a larger window, existing steel-framed windows were replaced with aluminium-framed units, and a new dividing wall was constructed alongside the refrigerator to create a cleaner, more integrated appearance.

3. Removal of Existing Wall & Floor Tiles

Once the structural work was complete, the existing wall and floor tiles were removed to prepare the surfaces for the new finishes.

4. Plumbing Modifications

The plumbing installation was altered to suit the new kitchen layout, including the repositioning of services for the farmhouse sink and other fixtures.

5. Plastering, Floor Screeding & Painting

Following the building work, the walls were replastered where required and the floor was re-screeded to provide a level surface for the new tiled floor. The walls were then painted in preparation for the final installation phase.

6. Cabinet Framework Installation

The new custom cabinet framework was installed, accurately positioned to receive the countertops, appliances and final finishes.

7. Electrical Connections & Lighting

Electrical installations were completed, including the final wiring for appliances and the installation of warm white LED strip lighting beneath the overhead cabinets.

8. Countertops, Sink & Splashbacks

White quartz countertops were fitted together with a matching quartz splashback. The under-counter farmhouse sink and black mixer tap were then installed to complete the work surfaces.

9. Floor Tiling

The new floor tiles were laid throughout the kitchen, providing the finished flooring before the remaining fixtures and appliances were installed.

10. Installation of Major Appliances

The stainless steel five-burner gas and electric stove, refrigerator and other major appliances were installed and connected.

11. Installation of Cabinet Doors & Final Finishing

The project concluded with the installation and adjustment of the cream and ivory melamine cabinet doors, black handles and all remaining finishing details, completing the transformation into a modern, functional open-plan kitchen.
